10 Things I’ll Miss About the Senior Bowl

JagNation.com’s Charlie Bernstein waves a fond farewell to Mobile, Alabama and all its wonders. Take an amazing tour through the cloud of weirdness that surrounds the Senior Bowl practices…
Like all good things, my time in Mobile, Alabama for the Senior Bowl is about to come to a close.  I’ve had so many memories that I’ll carry with me for a lifetime that it’s hard to pick just ten.  Here’s what I came up with.

1.  Lions assistant defensive line coach Kris Kocurek.  The bitter tease that Kocurek could have an actual coronary on any given play gave the scouts and media in attendance something to watch.  Kocurek is simply a man possessed.  He expects perfection and is never satisfied.  The man wakes up sweating and has a permanent vein in his head exposed for all to see. Good luck Mr. Kocurek and I hope your wife has a nice life insurance policy on you.

2.  The madness which was “Tebow-palooza.”  Never has there been such hype surrounding a fourth to fifth-round draft pick. Tim Tebow was mostly abysmal in passing drills and although his intangibles are off the chart, the tangibles of a horrible throwing motion, terrible footwork and a mediocre arm will transfer more effectively to the next level than his ability to “rally the troops” with his world-famous head-butts.  The good news is that I had a sore shoulder when I arrived likely from sleeping the wrong way, and Tebow gently brushed by me and I’ve never felt better.  I believe he’ll make more money turning water into wine than he will as an NFL quarterback.

3.  Various agent’s excuses for when their clients do poorly.  A defensive end can be pancaked or a wide receiver can drop an easy pass, and it will always be someone else’s fault, or the field or weather conditions.  I respect their work, as most are great to their clients, but to steal a line from ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown, ìCome on man!î

4. The local accents.  Nothing makes you feel smarter than when you hear someone with a deep southern accent mumbling about how great of a leader Tim Tebow is.

5.  The lines for free stuff.  It never ceases to amaze me how many millionaires will wait on a 20-minute line for a handful of shrimp with cocktail sauce.

6.  My hotel room.  I’ve traveled extensively in my sports writing/broadcasting career, but I’ve never previously experienced the amenity which is the automatic morning alarm.  Yes, I’ve had alarm clocks and even wake-up calls but they pale in comparison to the opportunity to be awakened by your neighbor taking a shower.  My paper-thin walls allowed me to do some investigative reporting and if I wanted to stalk the fine people next door I could’ve, but my love for chicken fingers and anything fried was not as great as theirs.

7.  My good friends and colleagues at Scout.  Whether it was Packer Report’s Bill Huber proving to all that he’s from Wisconsin by wearing shorts and a bright short-sleeved polo to practice in 40-degree weather, or Ed Thompson’s classic goatee and trench coat look making him appear to be the villain in any random spy movie, I love watching my colleagues do what they do. Our most famous colleague, Adam Caplan’s relentless schmoozing in search of the next big scoop taught me plenty, and I even learned that SD Bolt Report’s Michael Lombardo loves his two cats (most single men wouldn’t admit that they own cats).

8.  The lack of talent at the quarterback position (each year).  I love how no matter how hyped the Senior Bowl quarterbacks are, they always leave us disappointed.  At least this year’s crop was better than last.

9.  NFL experts from random sites I’ve never heard of.  I love the ìotherî draft sites claiming how they have unbelievable inside knowledge, while conversing with them it becomes very apparent that they probably know more about pro lacrosse than the NFL.

10.  Finally, I will miss the ex-football players relentlessly hounding each of the current NFL head coaches in search of a job.  I overheard one player actually beg as he mentioned about four times in 30 seconds that the coach didn’t even need to pay him.

Busy Wednesday at the Senior Bowl

Bernstein Blog- Busy Wednesday

During Senior Bowl week, Wednesday is usually the busiest day as everyone is looking to make their final impressions on the media and scouts as most teams evacuate on Thursdays.  Come spend the day with me.

7:45 a.m. (or thereabouts)- I awaken to the sound of the human in the hotel room next to me showering.  A less than stellar start to my day.

8:40 a.m.- Internet at the hotel is down so I’m headed over to Panera to get some signal and a bagel.  Both were excellent.

9:15 a.m.- Headed to the stadium to watch the North Team practice for the final time.  Upon my arrival I find my friends Michael Lombardo and Chris Steuber, as well as Adam Caplan.  We shoot the “stuff” for a bit and then begin watching practice, hopeful that someone will catch our eyes.

9:45 a.m.- Tony Pike has a strong arm, but his passes flutter.  Dan LeFevour has good presence and mobility, but I’m not sure if he can be anything more than a mediocre starting quarterback.  Sean Canfield throws a nice touch pass, but little else.

10:10 a.m.- Jacoby Ford has had a nice week of practices.  He is lightning fast and catches the ball pretty easily.  LeGarrette Blount continues to impress as he does a great job of finishing runs.  Fresno State running back Lonyae Miller has some running skills and burst.

10:30 a.m.- Corners Chris Cook, Devin McCourty and Brandon Ghee have been impressive.  Cook, standing 6’2” is the new, bigger type of corner who could be very effective against taller wideouts.

10:45 a.m.- Linebackers Sean Weatherspoon and Daryl Washington have really stood out as the best backers on the North squad.  Arkansas State defensive end Alex Carrington is a beast today as well.

11:05 a.m.- Practice is finished and I head to the field to get some interviews.  Cal defensive end Tyson Alualu, Idaho lineman Mike Iupati, and Virginia corner Chris Cook were some of he lucky players who got to speak to me.

11:30 a.m.- I head to O’Charley’s for some lunch, and make the mistake of keeping my ESPN credential visible.  Now everyone is a football expert and wants to talk to me instead of serving me my food.  They tell me how Tim Tebow really gets the team going and how that will translate over to the NFL.  Unfortunately, his inability to take a snap and his god-awful throwing motion will also translate.

1:15 p.m.- Head back over to the stadium for “Tebow-palooza 2010.”  This was clearly the biggest crowd I’ve ever seen at a Senior Bowl practice and there were people actually tailgating outside.  Today is going to be a long day.

2:00 p.m.- Tony Sparano has the team practicing special teams drills.

2:20 p.m.- Finally done with special teams, but now they’re stretching again.

2:45 p.m.- Some one-on-one stuff with the QB’s and WR’s.  Shea Hodge is a seamless route runner who is doing a great job of getting open.  It’s too bad the quarterbacks can’t get him the ball.

3:00 p.m.- I’m convinced that Jarrett Brown of WVU is the best quarterback on the South team, and it isn’t really even close.  Brown is a solid athlete who stands tall in the pocket and he has a really nice arm.  He has the highest upside of any quarterback on either roster.

3:15 p.m.- Riley Cooper just dropped another pass.  He started off the week very good, and now he’s dropping like an anchor.  Dexter McCluster is an absolute stud.  He can’t get 25 touches per game, but he will be able to score touchdowns.  Percy Harvin 2.0.

3:35 p.m.- More special teams drills?  Seriously Tony?

4:00 p.m.- Practice is finished.  Tim Tebow was horrible with the exception of a very nice touch throw down the sideline.  Jarrett Brown had a few misfires, but was good overall.  Zac Robinson is so bad that he almost makes Tebow look like a quarterback and not a shot-putter.  Eric Norwood continues his fine play, and Cameron Sheffield from Troy really flashed.

Interview time- I grab Shea Hodge, J.D. Walton and Matt Dodge.

4:00 p.m.- I’m doing my radio show at the same time as this stuff.  Not easy.

5:20 p.m.- I arrive at the team hotel for the press conference.  Apparently, Timmy is still ducking the media, but I did talk to Javier Arenas, Mike Iupati (again), Sean Weatherspoon and Jimmy Graham.

7:15 p.m.- Mike Lombardo and I decide to hit the town and try to find food.  We end up landing at some hole in the wall fish place and I eat crawfish for the first time.  I had the waitress de-shell the poor creature and she showed me how to eat it.  She was talking about sucking the head and the adolescent in my couldn’t really stop laughing.

7:45 p.m.- We’re done eating.  Food was good, but I have a sneaky suspicion that I may be getting ill from it.  Oh well, my fault.

8:30 p.m.- Back at the hotel after filling the rental car up with fuel.  I’m going to talk to the spouse, shower, then finish writing.  I’ll update you guys tomorrow.

Bernstein Blog- Tuesday

Bernstein Blog- Tuesday

Today will be my first full day in Mobile and I’m going to keep everyone updated with the haps of my day.

5:43 a.m.- Wake up, realize that it’s too early to be up so then I return to bed.

7:30 a.m- Wake up for real.  After some computer work I quickly find that my super high tech recorder was on the wrong setting and my audio from the previous evening has been rendered useless.  Time to do some computer work.

9:15 a.m.- I arrive at North team practice.  I attempt to convince Scout.com’s Chris Steuber that the Jacksonville Jaguars will not be selecting Florida quarterback Tim Tebow with their first-round pick.  I think it’s working.

9:45 a.m.- North quarterbacks don’t look great, but wide receiver Mardy Gilyard does.  He can get separation and he can catch the football.  Jacob Ford from Clemson also looks natural catching the forward pass.

10:15 a.m.- Jaguars GM Gene Smith enters the field.  He’s charting the throws of the quarterbacks.  Interesting.

10:55 a.m.- Practice is about over.  Boise State corner Kyle Wilson is excellent, but LeGarrette Blount really blew most scouts away.  He’s faster than originally believed and he’s a monster in pass protection.

“I think we saw a big difference in practice today as opposed to yesterday as players got a little bit more comfortable with what we expected from them and how we run practice,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said.  “Also, things slowed down a little bit more for them. We’re expecting them to make another jump tomorrow. As we get to Saturday, we’ll iron out more of the wrinkles that we saw in (Monday’s) practice.”

11:15 a.m.- Talked with Jack Del Rio, he was friendly but didn’t give me much tangible information.

11:20 a.m.- Done with interviews, I talked to Dan LeFevour, Mardy Gilyard and Sean Weatherspoon.  All seem like good kids and Gilyard and Weatherspoon were terrific today.  There are questions about LeFevour’s arm, although he was accurate on the underneath stuff.  He could be a starting QB in the league.

11:40 a.m.- Lunch at Panera, and I can’t get away from personnel.  The Seahawks scouts were there, and they were also at the sports bar I was at last night.  Am I stalking them or are they stalking me?

1:15 p.m.- Leave to go back to Ladd-Peebles Stadium.  South practice is packed with fans which you would expect from the team that hosts several of the national champion Crimson Tide.  Some Florida QB is also here, not sure of his name.

1:50 p.m.- Practice begins and Tim Tebow’s every move is scrutinized.  His terrible delivery is the one thing that stands out.

2:15 p.m.- The South team quarterbacks are so bad that it’s making the defense look great and everyone on offense look bad.  It’s official folks, Tebow can’t get it done at this level.

2:45 p.m.- Some players that are standing out are Eric Norwood, Ben Tate, C.J. Wilson, J.D. Walton and Riley Cooper.

3:15 p.m.- Practice is over and when I try to grab Tim Tebow for an interview, he’s mobbed by his “handlers.”  Apparently Tim is too sick to do interviews today and that’s affecting his play.  I remember the last time I had the sniffles I couldn’t take snaps from center for a week.

3:20 p.m.- On to greater things, I interviewed Ben Tate, Stafon Johnson, Brandon Lang and Nate Allen.  Johnson is a guy that you really want to root for.

4:00 p.m.- Back at the hotel and doing my radio show.

5:30 p.m.- Press conference time.  Talked to Jim Schwartz and Tony Sparano, along with LeGarrette Blount, Dexter McCluster, Brandon Graham and Geno Atkins.  Atkins has had a formal interview with the Jags, as has Blount.  Blount really seems to have his head on straight and I really don’t think everyone should pile on him for what he did.  I’m not just saying that because he did a radio promo for me.

“Practice was a little bit better today, certainly compared to yesterday. I thought we had a good day out there and got better in certain areas. Guys are excited about it and that’s all we can ask right now. They are doing a nice job with the installation [of the game plan] and have gotten better each day,” Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said.

6:55 p.m.- Time for dinner with SD Bolt Report’s Michael Lombardo and his photographer.  We head upstairs to the team hotel for food, then realize that each of us would have to take out third mortgages to eat.  Instead of leaving and looking completely “douchey,” we ordered an ahi tuna appetizer and decided to head to the Holiday Inn for some more economical dinner.

8:30 p.m.- Eating dinner and talking football.  Turns out Lombardo owns two cats and now I have no respect for the guy.  I did learn that he only hires female employees with the hopes of sexual intercourse in the workplace.  He earned a couple man points back.

10:30 p.m.- After some schmoozing, we all decide to part ways.  I’m headed back to my hotel to finish my this blog entry then retire for the evening.  See you tomorrow.

Weight Loss Challenge

As anyone who listens to the show knows, I (Alfie) am doing a weight loss challenge with our newest sponser, World Gym.  I am going to blog about my experience and keep everyone updated on my progress, because all of you should care.

Last night was Night 1 of the challenge and I met with my personal trainer, Brandon Sands, who I keep referencing to on the show as Dwight Freeney, because he’s a big Colts fan and he kind of looks like him. He put me through his fitness challenge, which was to see just how out of shape I am, which is a lot.

The process took about 45 minutes and by the end I could barely move my arms. I’m sore this morning, as expected, and will be heading back tonight after the show to continue the program Brandon is going to lay out for me.
